- Many breaks are over shallow reef. Ask a local surf school which spot suits your level before paddling out.
Ahangama and neighbouring Midigama have some of the most consistent surf on the south coast, from beginner beach breaks to fast reef and point waves for experienced surfers.
The village has become a base for surf camps, co-working cafes and small boutique stays, but the beaches remain fairly quiet compared with Unawatuna or Mirissa.
Inland, the Handunugoda estate is known for its white tea, and offers tours of a small factory and tastings.
