Best months

Getting around
Your lodge will arrange a guide and a jeep to the gate.
Good to know
A local guide is required inside the reserve. Wear leech socks, carry a rain jacket and keep cameras in a dry bag.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve protects the largest remaining patch of tropical lowland rainforest in Sri Lanka. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and most of its trees and many of its animals are found nowhere else.

It is best known for its mixed-species bird flocks, which can include the Sri Lanka blue magpie and other endemics, and for its frogs, lizards and butterflies. Guided walks follow forest trails from the Kudawa entrance in the north-west.

Stays are in simple lodges and guesthouses on the forest edge. The Deniyaya side to the south-east has separate entrances, but the drive round is long, so pick one side.
