Essentials

SIM cards, eSIMs and mobile data

Where to buy a tourist SIM at the airport, what the main networks charge, and what you need to register.

Mobile data is cheap and coverage is good along the main tourist routes, though it can be patchy in national parks and deep in the hills. A local SIM is the easiest way to use maps, ride-hailing apps and messaging.

Buying at the airport

The two biggest networks have counters in the arrival lobby at Bandaranaike International Airport, after customs. You need your passport; SIM cards must be registered to the buyer under the national regulations, and the staff do this for you. Both networks also sell eSIMs.
