The Dambulla cave temple, also called the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Five caves under a huge granite overhang hold around 150 Buddha statues, and their walls and ceilings are covered with paintings from many periods.
Dambulla sits on the main roads between Colombo, Kandy, Trincomalee and the ancient cities, so it is an easy base for the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya, Kandalama and the Minneriya safari are all within about half an hour.
Close to town are the Ibbankatuwa megalithic tombs, the shady Popham Arboretum, and, a little further south, the 8th-century stone shrine of Nalanda Gedige.
