Sigiriya

The fifth-century rock citadel of Sigiriya and its sister rock Pidurangala, in the dry forest at the heart of the island, with elephant safaris at the great tanks nearby.

Time to spend
2 nights
Best months
February to September. Some rain from October to January.
Getting around
Your driver or a tuk-tuk. Distances between sites are short but there is little public transport.
Good to know
Climb Sigiriya at opening time (7:00) to avoid the heat and the queues. Allow 2 to 3 hours, with about 1,200 steps.

Sigiriya rises about 180 metres above the surrounding forest. King Kashyapa built his palace on the summit in the late fifth century, and the climb passes water gardens, the famous frescoes, the polished Mirror Wall and the giant lion's paws carved at the last stairway.

Facing it is Pidurangala, an older monastery rock with a reclining Buddha and the classic view back to Sigiriya. In the dry season, herds of elephants gather to graze at the Minneriya and Kaudulla tanks, about half an hour away.

Base yourself in Sigiriya village or nearby for two nights. That gives you an early start on the rock before the heat, and time for a safari or a sunset climb of Pidurangala. The Dambulla cave temple is twenty minutes away and Polonnaruwa about an hour.
